When is the Best Time to Protect my Trees?
Fall and winter are the best times for the pruning of trees, especially for disease-sensitive species.
Diseases such as Oak Wilt and Dutch Elm Disease are dormant from late fall until spring. In the case of Oak Wilt, one of the most common methods of introducing the disease into healthy trees is by pruning during the warm "active" season. Wounds created by pruning or storm damage attract sap beetles that transmit the disease.
During the late fall and winter months, the beetles that transmit the disease are also dormant. Removing infected trees or repairing storm-damaged trees during this dormant period helps stem the spread of these diseases to healthy trees.
Aside from protecting against the spread of disease, pruning and removal during the fall and winter months protects against damage to the flowers, vegetable gardens, and other landscape.
